Advocates at risk: Bar Council of India urges law to safeguard legal professionals

On Sunday, the Bar Council of India (BCI) urged the Union Government to enact a law that would safeguard advocates and their families, as well as provide suitable compensation in the event of any physical harm or injury. The BCI made this demand in a joint meeting with the State Bar Councils, as per a press release.

Additionally, the council advised the Supreme Court to postpone the issue of same-sex marriage to the legislature, citing India’s diverse culture and the need for legislative processes to change any fundamental social structure.

In addition to the demand for legal protection for advocates and their families, the joint meeting of the BCI and State Bar Councils also addressed several other issues.

The meeting passed resolutions on the standardization of enrollment fees, the Bar Council of India Rules for Registration and Regulation of Foreign Lawyers and Foreign Law Firms in India, 2022, as well as the eligibility requirements for membership and voting in State Bar Councils and BCI.

The meeting was chaired by Manan Kumar Mishra, Senior Advocate at the Supreme Court of India and Chairman of the Bar Council of India. S Prabakaran, Senior Advocate and Vice-Chairman of the Bar Council of India, delivered the vote of thanks.
