Former MP Prajwal Revanna was placed under judicial custody by a Bengaluru court on Saturday, July 8, following the conclusion of his police custody in connection with the molestation allegation brought against him.
The suspended Janata Dal (Secular) leader was placed under the Special Investigation Team’s (SIT) custody on April 25 by Special Magistrate KN Shivakumar. The SIT is currently looking into allegations of sexual assault against the leader.
After more than 2,900 videos showing multiple women being sexually assaulted went viral online and on social media, Revanna was accused of sexual abuse.
At the Holenaraseepur town police station in the Hassan district, on April 28, a first information report (FIR) was filed against Prajwal Revanna and his father HD Revanna under the Indian Penal Code (IPC) Sections 354A (sexual harassment), 354D (stalking), 506 (criminal intimidation), and 509 (insult to woman’s modesty).
One of the victims submitted a complaint, which led to the criminal case being opened. The Special Investigation Team (SIT) led by senior Indian Police Service (IPS) officer BK Singh looked into the cases against Revanna.
Soon after the Karnataka Lok Sabha elections on April 26, Prajwal Revanna had left the country for Germany amid the fury and political upheaval that surrounded the allegations made against him.
On May 31, following his return to India, he was taken into custody.
Subsequently, he was placed under the custody of SIT from May 31 to June 10. In the subsequent second rape case, he was detained by the SIT from June 13 to June 18. The SIT was granted custody in the third rape case till June 24.
