On Wednesday, Prashant Patel Umrao, a BJP spokesperson and lawyer from Uttar Pradesh, filed a petition with the Supreme Court to consolidate the various first information reports (FIRs) filed against him at multiple police stations.
These reports accuse him of spreading false information about attacks on Bihari migrant workers in Tamil Nadu. Senior Advocate Sidharth Luthra presented the case to Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud, who agreed to list it for the following day.
The CJI ordered that the matter be scheduled for tomorrow. Umrao’s alleged tweets claimed that fifteen Biharis were “hanged in a room in Tamil Nadu for speaking Hindi” and that 12 of them “tragically perished.”
“After that, Tejaswi Yadav shamelessly celebrated birthday party with Stalin in Tamil Nadu,” the tweet alleged.
The Indian Penal Code sections 153 (provocation with intent to cause riot), 153A (hate speech), 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace), and 505 (statements conducive to public mischief) were applied, and FIRs were filed against Umrao at different police stations in Tamil Nadu. Later, Umrao moved to the Madras High Court seeking anticipatory bail.
