A request for an impartial judicial investigation and a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the July 2 Hathras stampede has been made in a public interest litigation (PIL) filed with the Allahabad High Court.
At a religious gathering in the Uttar Pradesh region of Hathras, there was a stampede that resulted in over 200 injuries and over 116 fatalities.
In Fulrai hamlet, which is under the control of Sikandrarau police station, the tragedy happened during a “satsang” led by self-described godman Narayan Sakar Hari.
The district officials’ incompetence, according to Advocate Gaurav Dwivedi’s appeal, caused the rush.
“…this type of irresponsible behavior and negligence of police a district administration towards safety of devotees who are from various states of India, so this type of inappropriate law and order put citizens of Uttar Pradesh will lose the faith on government instrument as well as legal system of state,” the complaint states.
The State government invests large public monies in innovative methods for improved administration, and the authorities have all the tools needed to prevent and manage any uncalled-for circumstances, it continues.
The plea also claims that law and order is routinely reviewed by the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh via video conference. Despite this, the Hathras government and the accountable police, who have a responsibility to uphold law and order and guarantee the security of the district’s citizens, have fallen short.
In addition to pleading with the court to take suo motu cognizance of the incident, the petitioner has asked for an independent judicial investigation, the suspension of specific individuals, and a CBI investigation.
