Is ‘Court me Goli’ a Bold Statement or Just a Controversial Song About the Judiciary

The PIL alleges that the song attempts to portray criminals as being above the Indian Judicial system.

On Wednesday, the Gujarat High Court announced its intent to review the Haryanvi song “Court Me Goli” in response to allegations that it contains elements targeting the judiciary.

A bench presided over by Chief Justice Sunita Agarwal and Justice Aniruddha Mayee was addressing a public interest litigation (PIL) filed by Umakant Chauhan, who raised objections concerning a YouTube video released in December 2022.

During the court proceedings, Advocate Kuldip Solanki, representing the petitioner, asserted that the song endeavors to depict criminals as superior to the Indian judicial system. Solanki stated, “The song portrays a criminal who stands before a judge and commits a murder in the judge’s presence. This song directly singles out the judiciary, attempting to convey that criminals hold dominance over the Indian judicial system.”

The judges inquired about the specific line that Solanki found offensive, to which the defense attorney responded, “It is only one line where the criminal says, ‘Bhari court me b goli marange, meri jaan, matha judge ka b avange paseene dekhiye’ (Translation: ‘Will fire shots in a packed courtroom, even the judge will be scared and sweat).'”

The attorney further highlighted that the song includes instances reflecting the prevalence of similar situations in courts across the country.

Following the concise arguments, the bench announced its decision to view the composition before reaching a verdict. Chief Justice Agarwal remarked, “Let’s begin by watching the song, and subsequently, we’ll form our opinions and make a decision regarding this matter.” She instructed that the video be presented within a week, and the case is scheduled for the following week.
