Punjab Advocate General Gurminder Singh’s Vision for Policy Defensibility

Singh, who is the third AG to be appointed since the AAP took power in 2022, talks about why instability has marred the AG office, his priorities, and the roadmap ahead.

Senior Advocate Gurminder Singh has recently been appointed as the new Advocate General (AG) for Punjab, entrusted with representing the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government in legal matters.

This appointment marks the third change in the Attorney General’s position within a span of 1.5 years since the AAP assumed power, underscoring the challenges faced by the current administration in securing a permanent candidate for this crucial role.

In January 2014, Mr. Singh, now 56 years old, earned the prestigious title of Senior Advocate from the Punjab and Haryana High Court. Throughout his career, he has handled a wide range of legal cases, including those involving constitutional matters, commercial disputes, tenders, services, arbitration, and criminal litigation.

Furthermore, he has previously served in various capacities within the legal framework, including Assistant Advocate General, Deputy Advocate General, and Additional Advocate General for the state of Punjab.

In his new capacity, Advocate General Singh aims to bring stability to his office and foster strong collaboration with various government departments, particularly the legal department.
