On Wednesday, the Delhi High Court issued an order that prohibits all media outlets from displaying or publishing the contents of the charge sheet in the Shraddha Walkar murder case. Aaftab Poonawalla, her live-in partner, is the accused in the case.
The Court further stated that the order would also prohibit the broadcasting of narcoanalysis audio and CCTV footage by the media. Justice Rajnish Bhatnagar passed the order in response to a petition filed by the Delhi Police.
The Court ruled that no media outlet or organisation with access to the indictment shall broadcast it on their channel. The federal government was also ordered to prevent any channel from airing such content.
The Delhi Police had initially sought a blanket ban on media outlets reporting the contents of the chargesheet, but the trial court directed them to petition the Supreme Court.
According to the police investigating the crime, Poonawala strangled Walkar on May 18, 2022, after a quarrel between the couple in a rented flat in Mehrauli, chopped her body into 35 pieces, stored it in a refrigerator and then dumped them in various parts of the city over the next 18 days.
The Court authorised narcoanalysis in the case in November of last year.
